Twelve universities in the Polish-German border region have formed a cooperation network
On 17 November, at the University of Greifswald, 12 universities signed a joint declaration to establish a network of cooperation between Polish and German universities in the border region. The alliance of universities in the Pomerania region will promote sustainable development in the region and strengthen exchanges between researchers and students from universities in both countries.
The University of Szczecin was represented at the meeting by: Vice-Rector for Organisation – Prof. Kinga Flaga-Gieruszyńska, Dr. Joanna Misiukajtis – Head of the International Affairs Department, Dr. Norbert Obrycki – Rector’s Representative for Territorial Cooperation, and Prof. Maciej Kowalewski, – Head of the UNESCO Chair for Sustainable Social Development.

The first activities for this network were undertaken in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair at the University of Szczecin in 2024, when the first meeting of rectors of some of the borderland universities was also held. In 2024 and 2025, working meetings were organised on the social dimension of sustainable development (in Szczecin, Neubrandenburg and Kulice).
The process of strengthening cooperation between universities working in the same region, initiated at the University of Szczecin, is entering its next stage. The universities have announced that in the coming years they plan to develop new research programmes, mobility projects and activities for interregional dialogue, thus responding to the needs of a changing Europe and border regions.
